"How much does an app cost?" is the most common question we hear and the one we refuse to answer in a blog post. Not because the answer is secret, but because any number given without understanding the app is a guess, and a guess presented as a quote is how projects go wrong. What we can do is explain what moves the number. If you understand the drivers, you control the cost — and you can tell when a quote is honest.
Driver one: scope, and how firmly it is written
The largest driver by far is what the app does. A first release with five well-defined features costs a fraction of one with twenty loosely described ones — and the difference is not only the features but the ambiguity. Every feature described in a sentence rather than a specification hides decisions that get made late, at the most expensive moment. The single most effective way to control cost is a written scope that names each feature and what "done" means for it.
Driver two: platform choice
iOS, Android, or both — and native or cross-platform. Driver three: the backend nobody sees
Most apps are the visible edge of a system: authentication, data storage, APIs, notifications, admin tools. The backend often costs as much as the app itself and is routinely omitted from early estimates. Ask any quote whether it includes the backend and an admin panel. If it does not, the number is for half a product.
Driver four: integrations
Payments, maps, identity verification, messaging, and third-party data all cost time to integrate and test. In the UAE, regional payment gateways and, for some sectors, government digital identity and regulatory integrations are common requirements. Each integration is a small project with its own edge cases. Count them before you count anything else.
Driver five: design fidelity
A functional interface built from standard components costs less than a bespoke design system with custom motion and illustration. Both can be excellent; they serve different products. Consumer apps competing for attention justify design investment; internal tools rarely do. Apps handling payments, health data, or personal data have obligations — encryption, consent, retention, audit trails — that add engineering work. This is not optional and it is not where to economise, but it should be scoped explicitly so it is not discovered late.

Senior engineers cost more per hour and less per feature. A junior team that takes three attempts at a payment flow is more expensive than a senior team that takes one. When comparing quotes, ask who will do the work; a low day rate with a junior bench is a common way to win a project and lose the budget.
Driver eight: what happens after launch
App stores change their rules, operating systems update, and users find things testers did not. Post-launch maintenance is a real cost that belongs in the plan. Ask what the first year of support includes.

Three practices keep app budgets honest. First, scope a first release that does the essential thing well — a focused product ships sooner, costs less, and teaches you what the second release should be. Second, insist on a written proposal that itemises features, platforms, backend, integrations, and support, so every line can be questioned.
